You make an uncomfortable topic 'normal'. Thank you, thank you. Because of your program more children will be safe!"

Talking To Your Child About Personal Safety

As a parent, you are the most important person in your child's life. Your child needs your love and your protection to keep him/her safe.  One of the most difficult subjects to talk about is child sexual abuse. It is possible to prevent this crime from reaching your family.

It is helpful to remember...

Children are trusting and vulnerable and offenders are manipulative and tricky.

Ninety percent of the time, the offender is known and trusted by the child and the family.

It is important that parents listen well and talk to their children.

The subject can be taught along with other safety rules.

Teach safety rules around touch and boundaries...

No one should be looking at or touching the private parts of your body that are covered by a bathing suit.

No one should be asking you to look at or touch the private parts of their body.

There should never be secrets about touching.

If you are ever uncomfortable with a touch or around a person, you should listen to your feelings, get away and talk to an adult that you trust.

You can tell me anything!

Do not put off talking to your child!  Remember that your child will pick up on what you are feeling. If necessary, establish your uneasiness with the subject before you begin the discussion.
