What is Therapy
Therapy is a unique opportunity for a child to meet with a trained professional who is willing and able to work together to establish goals for treatment and a pathway toward achieving those goals. For children who are coming to therapy for a history of abuse, this process also uses research-based treatment proven effective in helping children with the trauma.
How Will Counseling Help My Child?
The counseling relationship is a safe place for your child to label and express feelings and thoughts related to the abuse, such as anger, fear, and sadness. Your child will also be assisted in re-establishing the personal boundaries and sense of self-worth taken away by the abuser. Your child will learn that the abuse was not his/her fault.
How Long Will My Child Need To Come To Counseling?
Length of time in counseling varies. Your child’s counselor will help your child set goals to be reached in therapy. An individual treatment plan will be made and reviewed periodically. Your child may need to seek counseling in the future when leaving home, getting married, or having a child.
How Do I Request Counseling For My Child?
You can request for a referral to be made for your child through any of the professionals dealing with your child’s case at the Family Support Line. You can also reach out directly to our Therapy Team.

Individual Counseling
Individual therapy offers survivors an opportunity to develop their coping skills and explore their experiences at their own pace.
Family Counseling
Child sexual abuse affects the whole family. Family therapy can help members come together to support each other, talk about their experiences, and heal together.
Group Counseling
Sexual abuse can leave survivors feeling different and alone. It can be comforting to be with others who have gone through a similar experience. We periodically provide opportunities for survivors to come together for healing. (Based on demand.)
Short-Term Counseling, Psychoeducation & Consultation
Family Support Line’s Treatment Program staff also provide psychoeducation, consultation, and counseling for individuals who are directly or indirectly affected by sexual abuse. This includes debriefing and support services for mandated reporters.
Non-Offending Parent/Caregiver Support Group
Parents and others in parenting roles may struggle with their own feelings and challenges even as they support a child or youth who has been sexually abused. Family Support Line offers a professionally led support group where parents and other caregivers can seek support from others who face similar challenges.
Kids Psychosocial Skills Group
Family Support Line offers a group for child survivors, siblings, and other children ages 6-12 that meets at the same time as our parent support group. Group members learn about healthy relationships, stress management, and healthy emotional expression while having fun.
